Hello everyone! It's been a long time of not posting any blogs here. I neglected to visit this because I had been busy doing work stuff. "Boys Briefs 2" is a collection of six non-USA gay-oriented short films from 1999-2002"

"Doors Cut Down" ("En Maias Companias"; Antonio Hens; Spain; 17 minutes) shows 18-ish Guillermo as a skilled predator in a the bathroom of a Madrid-area mall. Guillermo casts his net a bit wider and attracts the attention from the police and his parents. Still, things have a way of changing and working out too. This was the most fun feature and had a catchy thematic beat. (English subtitles)

"Chicken" (Barry Dignam; Ireland; 3 minutes) shows two guys between the train tracks and the beach trying out each other's courage and affection. Effective for the time spent.

"Back Room" (Guillem Morales; Spain; 13 minutes) is a dark, anonymous place upstairs from a Spanish gay dance club that five major (and several background minor) characters go for quick sex. There's a first-timer, a punk, a hottie, a hunk, and an older man. They go through their motions, but the audience gets to hear their much less mechanical thoughts along the way. I liked the movie maybe too much; I found myself redoing parts and thinking about how to embed it in a longer movie that would show the characters before and after. (English subtitles)

"Breakfast" ("Fruestueck"; Alexander Pfeuffer; Germany; 14 minutes) has romantic, Berlin newcomer Boris (Nico Link) trying to keep a hold on impulsive, promiscuous Till (Tobias Schenke). Till's friend, Giselle (Anna Thalbach), offers breakfasts. Can they help? This is a nice, romantic comedy. (English subtitles)

"Touch" (Jeremy Podeswa; Canada; 27 minutes) is the most serious and, for me, the most memorable of the six films. A boy is locked in a basement and abused from the time he is eight years old until he is sixteen. When the doors open, the boy is free to leave. Upon leaving a hospital, he is given a name and lives with foster parents. Not given any further treatment, his past continues to drive his future. Brendan Fletcher gives an amazing performance as the sixteen-year old "Richard". The grainy photography fits well with the deadened sensibility and the shadowy faces used. Daniel Janke's dissonant music for violin and prepared piano fits perfectly and is performed well by pianist Janke and by violinist Mark Fewer. Five stars out of five.

"Take-Out" (Jean-Francois Monette; Canada; 37 minutes) was sponsored by Quebec and features road signs in French, although the characters all speak English. High school student Rory (Gianpaolo Venuta) delivers chicken dinners for Chalet Bar-B-Q. One day he delivers to Pete (Daniel MacIvor), a lawyer in a big house and with time on his hands. Rory keeps being asked back, and the tips keep getting bigger. Fellow worker Enzo (Benjamin Plener) and Pete's wife(?) Virginia (Kaya McGregor) are starting to ask questions. Rory has wandering eyes in the school shower and is looking at some interesting magazines in the rack. What happens next?

This is the first movie I've seen from Singapore and it's great. If you don't know a lot about Asia, its languages and its culture, then this film may be a bit confusing for the non-informed people. As an Asian-American who's double majoring in two Asian languages (one of them being Mandarin) and has taken some Asian American Studies classes, this film was easier for me to understand, but even without that kind of knowledge, I believe this movie is still accessible to its foreign audiences as long as you keep in mind that it's a coming-of-age type of movie. The film is definitely worth seeing just so that you get the chance to see what kind of issues Singapore's young teenage boys are struggling and having to deal with. This is an awesome coming-of-age movie, but filmed and shown in a more artistic and original way. The actors are outstanding.

Actor Geoffrey Nauffts makes a sharp and assured directorial debut with this moving short film about a gay schoolteacher applying to adopt a child. Kathy Bates is excellent as the head of the adoption agency whose own family has a surprise element, and Nauffts is sweetly nervous as the teacher who is eager to adopt a child. The camerawork is smooth and unobtrusive but keeps the static setting from becoming oppressive. Worthwhile for the performances and the promise shown by an actor stretching his wings.

Few moviegoers would know that the real Caravaggio was a convicted criminal and even by today's standards, a hell raiser. Rome's police records list fourteen citations in six years, from public nuisance to several violent assaults. In May of 1606 he murdered a friend, one Ranuccio Tomassoni in a sword fight. Added to these lurid details, his sexual interests show that he freely drifted from the Vatican's ordained model. This makes Caravaggio an interesting person, but a highly complex candidate for a biographic investigation on film.

While Derek Jarman's film captures (with delightful conceit) many of the surface details of Caravaggio's life, it's a work of startling genius because it succeeds on a far more profound level. Jarman tells the story of Caravaggio rather like Caravaggio would paint, infusing it (effortlessly) with the central themes of his life's deepest convictions, creating a portrait which reflects the subject and the artist with equal relevance. What's more, many of the same themes that have been identified with both artists - sexuality, transcendence, violence, censorship, politics (religious/sexual) and the tumultuous source of creative identity are present in both men. It works as very few films do. This is also an unusually accessible film for Derek Jarman. The performances are entertaining and it's filmed with astounding beauty and simplicity. This film is a masterpiece.

However, because of it's homosexual themes and personal tone, _Caravaggio_ is likely to be appreciated only by those viewers who weary of film as simple diversion and long for something more challenging. This is a powerful artistic statement, but it flew under the radar during a decade of British film-making where _Gandhi_, _Chariots of Fire_ and _A Room With A View_ represented the best of what was being made. While those films are great in their way, this film value is greater in terms of bravura and personal expression. See it if you can.

Phillip Bartell's _Crush_ is a terrific, breezy, sweet short film that debuted at film festivals in 2000. Brett Chukerman is perfect as the Robbie -- the slightly alarmed, innocent, closeted young gay teenager spending the summer with his grandmother in a small town. When just-becoming-a-teenager Tina (the endearing and dead-on Ema Tuennerman) develops a crush on the piano-playing, sitcom-loving Robbie, you know it's got to end badly -- especially because they both have a crush on the same boy-band/teen actor! It's tenderhearted-teen-girl-gets-crush-on-closeted-gay-cutie, but the film is so wonderfully nuanced and manages to nail the closeted life right on the head that you don't care that it's got to end with some broken hearts. But don't worry: Bartell isn't cruel enough to let either our hero or heroine sit forlornly in the park! Love (and friendship) wins out in the end. Pay special note to the terrific soundtrack by Boris Worister, the bashful performance by Weston Mueller as hunk-a-licious Tim, and Jack Rogers as the clueless cute Casey. Bartell promises to turn _Crush_ into a feature-length film, but it's perfect JUST AS IT IS!

This movie has going for it what very few 'gay movies' have; the characters and the plot are realistic. The principle actors were very good in their roles. The only real problem was getting the acting down on film. Lots of the scenes are pretty dark, and sometimes it's hard to hear exactly what's being said. But, these are problems that lots of low-budget films, and, again, the story makes up for it.

Some people I know say that the long shots of one character during a scene, or the periods of silence between the actors make them uncomfortable, but that's why i like the movie. It's very realistic. People don't talk like they do in Kevin Smith films. Sometimes you just sit with your boyfriend and don't know what to say for a while.

Again, Acting-Good, Story-Good, Cinematography-Medium. If nothing else, see it because Matt Austin, who plays Merrick here, is the Green Ranger in the current Power Rangers Show. Small World.

DON'T ASK DON'T TELL is essentially a funny idea: take one long-forgotten old sci-fi potboiler and overdub the soundtrack with a lot of silly dialog that takes the film in a whole new (fabulous) direction. Something about gays and space aliens. There's some new footage, too. Mostly camp inserts like a bug-eyed alien line dance that's one of the film's best chuckles. But the whole thing is decidedly silly, and even at 75 minutes, it runs out of gas long before the credits roll. It's the sort of thing the guys from MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000 perfected without cannibalizing the film. While MST3K's witty commentary was of the collegiate sort, this film is strictly grade school stuff. If you crack up at fart jokes, this film's for you. The DVD is packed with extras, which is sort of like doing a documentary on a kindergarten pageant. I'll stick to MST3K - even if I don't get every reference, I don't feel like a grade schooler.

Most say Eternal Summer is a gay movie. But I would rather call it a movie about relationships.

Newbies Bryant Chang and Joseph Chang play two best friends who come a long way from primary school after they were paired off as motivational buddies by their form teacher. As the 'third party' Carrie (Kate Yeung) enters the scene, the relationship becomes more complicated. All three struggle with love and friendship _ a line that can seem so clearly divided but is not.

With 4 nominations at the Golden Horses, this movie caused a stir in Taiwan, both in terms of theme and story. Fortunately, it did not sink into typical Taiwanese melodramatic mode. The director takes his time to unfold, filled with awkward yet genuine moments. Note the parallels that he draws, and the subtle contrast between scenes reveal more than what is said.

Many times, the audience may feel frustrated with the slow pacing, and wished that the characters would just acknowledge what they feel. Perhaps this is a reflection of individuals being unaccepted and different in society, whether you are a gay, migrant or loner. You may just identity with the 3 characters' suppression and lack of ability to communicate.

With Lan Yu winning the Golden Horse, and Brokeback Mountain the Golden Globes paving the way, homosexual themed movies have started arriving to the shores of Singapore (with some censorship). Just a few years before, it would almost seem impossible that movies like Eternal Summer would be screen here. Liberation of the authorities or sophistication of the audience? To emphasize, this is not just another 'gay' movie, and may disappoint those going for the wrong reasons. With the tagline _No One Wishes To Be Lonely, Neither Do We_, it can be viewed as a beautifully shot movie on the pains of growing up, friendship and love.

Events conspire to frustrate the budding romance between a naive country boy (Tony Yang) searching for love in Taipei, and a local stud (Duncan Chow) notorious for his sexual conquests.

A smash hit in its native Taiwan, this breezy romantic comedy was the inaugural production of Three Dots Entertainment, an independent studio committed to the production of commercial genre movies, and was directed by first-timer Chen Yin-jung (aka DJ Chen), a 23 year old graduate of Yuan Ze University. To her credit, Chen tackles the film's subject matter head-on and refuses to cut away when the two guys at the center of Rady Fu's old-fashioned screenplay finally - inevitably - get it on. Yang and Chow maintain a respectful distance from one another at first, each afraid to make that crucial leap of faith, until Yang finally turns up on Chow's doorstep and sighs: _Let's stop pretending, it's tiring_, leading to the film's central sex scene, a tasteful affair with lots of kissing and fumbling and raunchy good intentions. Much of the running time, however, is given over to various comic interludes involving Yang's newfound friends (Jin Qin, Dada Ji and Jimmy Yang), a trio of outrageous queens who insist on making a melodrama out of the tiniest crisis. Unfortunately, the comedy is forced and unfunny and a little too excessive at times, but the central love story yields its fair share of tender rewards.

As a vehicle for its ultra-sexy leading men, FORMULA 17 is hard to beat: Yang and Chow (the latter billed simply as 'Duncan') achieved teen idol status in popular Taiwanese TV dramas, where they both played wholly conventional roles. Here, Yang is a childlike innocent searching for True Love, and Chow is a beautiful playboy whose reputation belies his own desperate search for emotional fulfilment. Standout scenes include a comic episode in which Jin and co. set up Yang with a hunky prostitute (Yang Zhi-long) who turns up at Our Hero's apartment posing as a plumber, in a scenario lifted wholesale from countless porn videos; and an early sequence in which Yang and Chow bump into one another while standing at a busy crossroads, where their hesitant overtures are kindled by an elderly gent standing alongside them, who despairs of their reluctance to acknowledge a mutual attraction (this scene has a *very* gay conclusion!). Chen allows the pace to slacken during dialogue exchanges (the bulk of the movie!), which takes some of the fizz out of proceedings, but the film has a virtuous heart and builds to a joyous conclusion which - along with the cute guys and up-front sexuality - probably bolstered its commercial fortunes at the Taiwanese box-office. Production-wise, Chen makes the most of her limited resources, and she's well-served by Chen Huei-sheng's imaginative cinematography, and Zack Gu's designer-label art direction/costume design (leading to the movie's biggest laugh, when Yang pronounces 'Gucci' as 'juicy'!).

Get Your Stuff

This movie starts out fine and has a very enticing premise: two gay guys who want to be foster parents (aren't they all waiting for an infant to adopt?) get 2 unruly pre-teen boys, but end up loving them. The trouble is that the story bogs down in the middle and goes through some strange wormholes. There are incidents, scenes and action that have no connection. It was impossible to follow a plot at all. What a shame! The scriptwriter must have had a stroke at that point and just wrote gibberish afterwards. It ruined what was otherwise a very cute movie. PS The reference to AA is quite fascinating, and could be seen as being very socially enlightening.

Holy Macaroni! Believe the hype, folks...this really IS one of the most shocking, confronting and raw movies ever made! It actually is one of those rare purchases that makes you wonder what the role of cinema is in modern society. Irr_versible certainly can't be classified as 'entertainment', that's for sure. It merely looks like a brutal eye-opener, highly unpleasant to watch at times and it sometimes makes you even feel ashamed to be human! Some of the stuff here goes beyond your most feared nightmares and could easily provoke depression, anti-social behavior and anxiety among influential viewers. It's real-life drama and that makes it so powerful and shocking. Irr_versible is told backwards, 'Memento'-style if you wish...only it's a lot more effective here as it was in Memento, which actually was a pretty boring and extremely overrated movie. This very simple backwards-structure aspect gives Irr_versible the opportunity to implement a couple of unique and rarely seen style elements. The first half hour (which actually is the end of the story) smacks you in the face right away sets the tone for a non-stop, raw experience. Also, you don't really get to know the characters until the last chapter (which is actually the beginning of the film) The characters are a riddle to you constantly and you can't symphatise with any of them, since you just know too little. Through wild camera movements and simplistic techno-music, a claustrophobic and horrifying atmosphere gets created and the violence is really hard to digest. The infamous scene in which Monica Belluci brutally gets raped is one of the most perverted things I've ever seen. It seems to go on forever and you can really visiualise the painful hell the poor girl is going through. I'd call Irr_versible a successful combination of ancient, rough exploitation and modern art-house film-making. The brutality portrayed here is typical for the euro-shock cinema but the stylish shooting lifts it up to Cannes Festival material. Cult as pure as it comes!

This collection of short gay films was half entertaining. The first few films were cute, one was actually very good. The remaining films were borderline terrible including one that absolutely stank.

The first story is _Burls_, a cute tale narrated by Mark Hammill about a young pre-teen boy (who eerily resembles a young Jodie Foster) growing up in the 1960's, his eyes opening up after seeing a group of drag queens walking down the street, or _boys dressed up as girls_ (hence the title _Burls_). We then follow his identity awakening as he tries on his mother's clothes and make-up, fantasizes about the hot young male working at the pet store and a run-in with what appears to be two revolting pedophiles (one in a gym locker room, the other in a car). This short was actually cute save for the rather abrupt ending.

The second story is _Touched_ which is the best short film in the collection. It is about a middle-aged male who picks up a younger male in a night club, only to discover that the younger male has a different agenda. There are a lot of emotions in this one short, particularly concerning the middle-aged male. His agenda is to just _touch_ someone out of loneliness, to be with someone, if only for an encounter. What happens when the two men reach out to each other is very powerful.

The third story is _10 Pesos_ which really isn't _gay_ at all (except for one scene involving an old man and a john). It's basically a short film that follows the path of a peso bill that travels through different hands and situations, starting in a night club and ending up in the street. The ending is actually quite stupid and I'm not even sure what the director was aiming for with all the money blowing around in the air.

The fourth story is _Safe Journey_, and this is where the collection starts to go downhill. It is about a young man who gets beaten up on the street and seeks refuge in the home of a blind Asian man. The Asian man is seen at the beginning praying and reading braille, when by chance the young man who shows up in his house has some sort of connection to his prayers. There is supposed to be some sort of spiritual (though non-sexual) connection between the two via Buddhism or some Chinese God, but it's actually quite laughable really.

The fifth story is _Shaving The Castro_, a rather boring documentary short on a barbershop that was established in San Francisco's Castro district in the 1940's with a client_le of children and families, and how time has changed since then as the community is now predominantly gay.

The sixth story is _Gaydar_, an absolutely horrid abomination concocted by someone who obviously never got past Judy Garland and every other gay stereotype known to man. For those of you not in the know, _Gaydar_ is a term often referred to in the gay community as a gift to detect those who are gay and those who are not. I'll have to admit that Poltergay is a lot of fun, for straight folks and gay folks alike. It's probably something that Kelvin Tong's Men in White could have been - smart, witty and with that level of cheekiness, without almost always falling flat on its jokes. If it could have been at least what Poltergay was, then it won't have to suffer the misery of a relatively poor box office, or DVDs that I think most people would stand around the shops to watch for free, rather than to purchase a copy for personal consumption.

The plot for Poltergay is a no brainer. Married couple Marc (Clovis Cornillac) and Emma (Julie Depardieu) move into an old dilapidated house at a bargain price. While slowly converting it to livable conditions, it turns out that Marc begins to hear things (extremely loud music at 0155hrs each time), before suddenly realizing there're 5 queer men living in his cellar. However, it seems that he's the only one who can see these fellas, and before you know it, he's branded mad, and runs into martial troubles because, well, it's a gay themed movie, so naturally, everyone around thinks that Marc is a closet gay, secretly fantasizing about men, and 5 of them no less!

What I liked about the movie is how it incorporated the gay moments into the story and the jokes quite seamlessly, and introduced perhaps in an extremely novel way, the rationale behind ghost-spotting. It certainly took the mickey out of a lot of things, and brought out some laughter in subtle, razor sharp manner. However it is not without its flaws, as the introduction was a tad too draggy, and I thought took about an hour before the pace and the comedy picks up, and suddenly, there was a big squeeze of plenty of smaller subplots into the last 30 minutes, including the resolution and finale. Essentially it boiled down to screwing up, wrecking havoc, before the ghouls decided to help Marc get back to this normal life again.

And the ghouls were pretty hilarious in themselves, with their penchant for tight clothing, and their disco dancing ways to Boney M's Rasputin for instance, injecting a certain amount of retro disco energy when they get down to boogeying the night away. Their individual characters could not be any different from one another, with for instance, a closet heterosexual (oh!), a gay couple, one nursing a broken heart, and one who likes to replicate his male manhood at almost every conceivable object he can get his hands on.

It didn't have to rely on crude toilet humour, nor plenty of slapstick moments to bring on the laughs. What it had was a refreshing take on the horror-comedy genre, with a twist of the queer for good measure. Like I mentioned, it's enjoyable fluff, good enough for those stressed out workdays where you need some light hearted relief to keep your sanity.

Pracht

Apparently, Pracht is one gay short film included in a collection of gay films by film students in Germany. The collection is titled F*uck Different. There is some indication in descriptions of the collection that I've read that these shorts are aimed at Lesbians and/or it is a study on how lesbians view gay men and how gay men view lesbians. So, while Pracht looks like it is just a short film about a guy fantasizing about having sex with another guy he is sitting across from on the train, it is possible that the narration (in German) could add another dimension to the film. It appears that Pracht is likely a lesbian's view of what gay male love is or how she thinks it should be. BTtw, PRACHT translates to SPLENDOR in English.

This is a well-plotted, superbly cast follow up to the first Donald Strachey film, _Third Man Out._ I personally found the subject matter_-sexual _healing_ for gays_-more engrossing than the _outing_ theme of the first film. Once again, Chad Allen is fascinating as the macho gay detective. And his back story_-he's an ex-soldier who was drummed out of the service for being gay_-more ably serves the screenplay this time around. The regulars all seem more comfortable in their roles, and it's nice to see Nelson Wong returning as Donald's secretary. Morgan Fairchild appears in a rather thankless cameo, and, although Sebastian Spence is a little less ditsy as Donald's lawyer boyfriend (Nora to Allen's Nick), Timmy, Allen's banter with Daryl Shuttleworth, as Detective Bub Bailey, and the other guys at the precinct is more fun. It's a first-class production, with director Ron Oliver making all the right moves, and Allen's acting is nothing short of brilliant: he does Emmy-caliber work in a surprisingly literate script.

The boys start a sexual relationship, and there are many very homoerotic moments, with full frontal nudity, simulated sex acts and a creative use of a container of yogurt. But Patrick meets Mo, a young woman with the circus who has a rare condition that forces her to avoid the sun or most artificial light, and it becomes apparent that Patrick is somewhat bisexual. Patrick also gets a job with the circus, first as a laborer and eventually as a fill-in for a performer, hoping to get some leads about the poisonous frogs. Oh yeah ... and all of this is told in flashbacks, by Jannis, as he is being tortured by someone for some reason to force him to remember the details. The film, which is set _in the not too distant future_, also pauses periodically to give you a _quiz_ on what other film they are paying tribute to with various scenes. All together now: _Huh??_

At one point the boy Ole is expelled for hanging pornographic pictures in the bathroom, but the boys won't let him be expelled and unite against the old fashioned views of the headmaster. Finally the teachers have to let Ole stay. We also follow Bo (15) and Kim (12) who is the headmasters son. They become very intimate and even though it is clearly more than just a friendship it is portrayed in a very innocent manner. There relationship is not portrayed as a struggle with sexual identities, but rather as something natural. They do not hide it from the other boys at school who seem to consider it normal. The film ends with all the boys at school showing a film they have made about one of the commandments in which we see Bo and Kim in an intimate but still innocent looking embrace and kiss.
